The US Government has recently been catching fugitives from their top ten “Most Wanted” list. A report released late last week states that James "Whitey" Bulger, FBI's #1 most wanted, was captured after 18 years of being on the run. Mr. Bulger was previously #2 but he took the top spot after Osama Bin Laden was killed. It’s better late then never to catch a fugitive.
The Boston bad guy was depicted perfectly by Jack Nicholson in the Oscar winning crime drama The Departed (FYI: great movie). Bulger was captured at his subsidized apartment home in California. Bulger, at 81, was with his 60 year old girlfriend, Catherine Greig.
There is no surprise why Hollywood would pick such a perfect person and glamorize him as a larger than life character. Thanks to his childhood friend, John Connolly, Bulger became an FBI informant. Bulger would constantly rat on members of the Italian mafia. Just like the movie, Bulger would inform on his gang enemies and in turn the FBI would not arrest him. Bulger’s childhood friend, John Connolly, is retired and is currently serving time in prison on charges related to assisting Bulger and his gang.
So now, the Most Wanted list has one less criminal on it. Even if it took close to 20 years to apprehend the elusive Whitey, it proves that you can't run too long from the law.
