Loosing the Last 10 is a Sprint - Not...

We all have been there. You exercise and try to eat properly and when you get on the bathroom scale, it doesn't move an inch. I have thrown out more scales that way - thinking that for whatever reason it is fixated on a certain number that isn't the least bit flattering.
If you've hit the "final 10" wall - those last 10 pounds that you seem to obtain freshmen year in college and it stays with you your entire life - there is a good reason for this as it turns out: biology. "We have built-in mechanism that protects against starvation, so when caloric intake falls below caloric expenditure, a series of metabolic and physiological responses kick in to preserve and replenish energy stores." goes the explanation by Barry Levin, MD, professor and vice chair of the department of neurology and neurosciences at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark - so this guy knows what he's talking about.
That last 10 is a sprint not a marathon as most of us tend to think. So what do you do? Well, one thing is not to fixate on a number - this I know first hand, it doesn't help. The real question is once you get your goal weight, are you able to keep the diet and exercise regimen your entire life? Instead of aiming for your lowest achievable weight, maybe shoot for your lowest maintainable weight. A more realistic view could be all it takes.
There is a tremendous epidemic in this country that often goes overlooked. I heard someone say that the only acceptable addiction is that addiction to food. Biology is one thing, but if you can switch your way of thinking maybe you can live a healthy life.
